Evelyn Kennedy

Evelyn Kennedy was born on January 23, 1939, in Tennessee and moved to Detroit with her family. She joined the Women’s Army Corps in January 1961 and served for two years as a Finance Specialist at Fort Hood, Texas during the Vietnam War. After her discharge, Staff Sergeant Kennedy joined the U.S Army Reserve, serving until 1996. In 1985, she joined Wolverine Chapter 67, Women’s Army Corps Veterans Association, using her military knowledge to serve veterans throughout the state of Michigan. With WAC-VA Evelyn served as Chaplain, Financial Officer, Secretary, Vice President, and President for a total of 20 years. With the National WAC Veterans Association-Army Women United, she served as Secretary (3 terms), National Community Projects Chairperson, and with the National Honor Guard for 25 years. Evelyn has diligently and conscientiously volunteered at the John Dingell VA Medical Center in Detroit. As the Deputy Veteran Service Officer for the VA’s Center for Development and Civic Engagement, she actively participated in many VA-sponsored events. For her enduring contributions to her community, Evelyn has received many accolades. She is the recipient of a Resolution and Notable Female Service Certificate, the Distinguished Veteran Award, the Legion of Honor Humanitarian Award, and the Veteran of Honor Award. She was honored by the City of Southfield with a Resolution and Certificate of Service, which proclaimed July 26, 2006 “Evelyn Kennedy Day”.
