Jennifer Smith was born on November 27th, 1971, in Lansing. She Joined the United States Army, serving honorably from November 1990 to August 1992 as a Pharmacy Specialist and rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant. During Jennifer’s time in uniform, she deployed with Charlie Company, 326th Medical Battalion, 101st Airborne Division during the Persian Gulf War. In her desire to serve and support fellow veterans, she joined the American Legion, and during her 15 years with the organization served as Commander of the all-female American Legion Post 535, and as American Legion Department of Michigan Chaplain. As a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, for over nine years, Jennifer served as Commander of Post 701, Commander of District 6, as a member of the VFW Department of Michigan Legislative Committee, as State Legislative Director, as Outreach and Congressional Liaison, as State Chaplain, and in 2015, testified before the Congressional Veterans Affairs Committee regarding Gulf War illnesses. She also served with the Ingham County Veterans Affairs Committee, and Ingham and Clinton County Trust Fund for over 10 years. For her enduring service and contributions to her fellow veterans, Jennifer was inducted to the Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame in 2017. Sadly, Jennifer passed away on November 5th, 2021, at 49 years of age.
