Technical Sergeant Andrew D. Kubik served with distinction in the U.S. Air Force. Enlisting at 18, Kubik became a Combat Controller with the elite 23rd Special Tactics Squadron. On November 23, 2001, during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, Kubik’s unit was ambushed by Taliban forces near Kandahar. Despite intense enemy fire, including anti-aircraft guns and rocket-propelled grenades, Kubik remained exposed to coordinate critical air support. His actions were instrumental in breaking the Taliban’s resistance, clearing the way for a successful offensive. For his gallantry, Kubik was awarded the Silver Star, one of the nation’s highest military honors. His bravery and leadership were credited with turning the tide of the battle and securing a pivotal victory in southern Afghanistan. After his service, Kubik faced personal struggles, including PTSD, but eventually rebuilt his life. His legacy of courage and resilience serves as an enduring example of dedication and sacrifice in service to his country.
