Karl Richter

First Lieutenant Karl Wendell Richter was a United States Air Force officer and fighter pilot renowned for his bravery during the Vietnam War. A graduate of the United States Air Force Academy in 1964, Richter was determined to become a fighter pilot from a young age. Deployed to Southeast Asia with the 421st Tactical Fighter Squadron, he flew the F-105 Thunderchief on numerous combat missions over North Vietnam. On September 21, 1966, at just 23 years old, Richter became the youngest pilot to shoot down a MiG-17 in air-to-air combat. Completing 100 missions, Richter volunteered for an additional 100, demonstrating exceptional courage. On his 198th mission, on July 28, 1967, Richter’s aircraft was hit by enemy ground fire. Though he ejected, he was severely injured and succumbed to his wounds. Posthumously awarded the Air Force Cross, his legacy as a courageous and selfless aviator continues to inspire future generations.
